science day: how do airplanes fly

continuing with janice vanCleave’s play and find out about science:

i wonder…how do airplanes fly?

exploring the concept of lift was exciting
(and a bit counter-intuitive for me).

when we blew between two balloons hanging from the table
the balloons actually moved toward each other!

then when we blew across a slightly curved strip of paper
— simulating how air moves above the wing of an airplane —
the paper lifted!

the explanation:
slow moving air pushes more on things it flows across than fast-moving air.
the slow-moving air on the opposite sides of the balloons
and the air under the of strip of paper
pushes more on the objects than the fast-moving air.
