that’s sew you

summerSewing2015Sanaa

the big girls went to a week-long “that’s sew you” summer sewing camp with ms. leona
and their ma-ma-ma (what they call my mother) as the co-teacher.
not only did my mom get to share her love of quilting,
she got to share it with a room of girls
that included two of her favorite “granny girls”,
passing on skills that she learned from her mother
to a third generation.

summer steps with step afrika! 2015

our two big girls enjoyed another fantastic, tiring, exhilarating week
perfecting step routines under the hype, creative tutelage of step afrika!
with a touch of dem raider boyz (just for good measure),
culiminating in a massive step show in the kogod courtyard
of the national portrait gallery.

stepAfrikaSummerSteps2015Performance

summer steps with step afrika! is over,
but step afrika! is giving free performances
in all of DC’s 8 wards — a “step xplosion” — until september.
check them out.
you might get step-fever.

woods wise

this summer three of our girls attended
ancestral knowledge‘s woods wise camps.
the progression of their comfortability with nature
and knowledge and hands-on application of survival skills
makes me so…envious.

they came home mud-stained from neck to toes,
sometimes with a tick or two,
but always with a sense of confidence, camaraderie with their peers,
and calm.

i didn’t catch a pic of signGirl, but after her first woods wise camp
she is comfortable wielding a very sharp knife of her own,
and us parents are confident that she can handle it responsibly.

in woods wise 2,
among other things,
mercyGirl learned how to use a bow drill to make fire.
that’s some primitive power!

this is radianceGirl’s third woods wise camp.
she made her own bow and arrow.
how cool is that!

though they still ask us parents to remove spiders from their rooms
or squeal in terror because of some many-legged insect,
there is something about spending all day outdoors
(with some excellent counselors as their guides)
that gives them the courage to go farther.

gsk science in the summer at deanwood library

both mercyGirl and signGirl participated in the free
gsk science in the summer™ program
at deanwood neighborhood library.
they explored simple machines
and even got to take home a few different types of pulleys
along with a backpack and safety goggles.
gskScienceInTheSummer2015
the classes were small
and every one-hour session included a hands-on project,
often building on concepts from the previous day.
this class served as a review of science concepts
in what has been mostly a summer of art classes & camps.
good to see that they’ve still got love for science.
